Lyrics: Shin-Sa-Im-Dang, by Joopoong Kim

Shin-Sa-Im-Dang                                                                         Music and Lyrics by Joopoong Kim (b. 1958)

                                                                                                                   English Translation by Woojong Kim

Shin-Sa-Im-Dang was a famous Korean artist, writer, calligraphist, noted poet, and the mother of the renowned Korean Confucian scholar, Yulgok.  The Korean version of the refrain comes directly from the original poem by Shin-Sa-Im-Dang.

The beauty of the mountains and waters flows from a single stroke of your brush

The beauty of the floral petals blossom from a single swipe of your brush

The beauty of the flower buds sprout from every touch of your brush

Oh~ our fair lady Shin-Sa-Im-Dang, the woman with the delicate touch

In your hands, even the butterflies and dragonflies come to rest untouched.

Each stroke of your letters express your message

Each word forms to convey the emotions of your heart

You whose poems embody your longing for your mother so apart

Oh~ our fair lady Shin-Sa-Im-Dang

In your hands, each stroke becomes a message of your love.

(Refrain)

My mother, her hair so white, remains in Gang-Rueng, her hometown

As my body turns toward Seoul, my heart so alone, good-bye

I turn many times to gaze upon my hometown

Oh~ how clear the mountains look beneath the clouds gliding on high.

Can a great son be said to be just my own?

My son who serves his country, my son’s name is Yul-gok

Oh~ our fair lady Shin-Sa-Im-Dang, the woman who raised such a son so renown

You are a great mother, you are a mother to us all.
