Indiana Wesleyan University will be hosting a New Works Symposium on Nov. 13-14 featuring twelve new original art songs and opera scenes commissioned by Soprani Compagni, a group comprised of three IWU music professors, Dr. Lisa Dawson, Dr. Tammie Huntington and Dr. Phoenix Park-Kim. The symposium, entitled “Soprani Compagni: Portraits of Women in Contemporary Soprano Duet,” features soprano duets that highlight significant women and their valuable contributions to society from Biblical times to present day.

The two-day conference will feature the world premiere of these new works, performed by Soprani Compagni, in addition to providing an opportunity for attendees to meet and interact with the group’s feature composer team on various topics. Sessions will include the following:

  • Writing for Voice & the Commissioning/Collaboration Process
  • The Art of the Chamber Opera
  • A Composer’s Career & Calling
  • How Tone, Gesture, and Color Convey Character, Meaning and Order
  • Text, Facial Expression and Tone of Voice: Three Dramatic Accessories that Lure Composers Towards Vocal Genres
  • How to Push Forward When Encountering Setbacks in your Musical Endeavor
